ANOTHER BIG REASON WHY YOU NEED TO INVEST AT THE NEXT DUBAI OF AFRICA (IBEJU-LEKKI) NOW!!!
The construction of the N19.3 billion coastline road linking Ondo and Lagos States has been flagged.
The 51 kilometer Araromi-Akodo/Ibeju-Lekki road project is jointly funded by by Ondo State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (OSOPADEC} and Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC].
Gov. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu of Ondo state performed the ceremony on Thursday at Araromi Seaside, Ilaje Local Government Area of the State.
Akeredolu said the road project, when completed, would engender unprecedented economic activities in the state.
The governor noted that the road was the only link between Niger Delta coastal communities and Lagos state.
He said that the state government had set aside a special account for the construction of the road, pointing out that the NDDC had also promised to pay its counterpart fund into the account.
“We assure our people that this very important project will not suffer the fate of other projects in the past that were hurriedly conceived to achieve parochial political ends.
“Knowledge of the indispensability of a link road between our coastal communities and Lagos propels this administration to be doubly committed to it.
“We shall not rest on our oars until it is completed. We, therefore, enjoin community leaders to ensure safety of contractors who have been mobilised to site.
“We shall not tolerate any acts which may militate against smooth the take-off, construction and completion of this project,” the governor said.
Earlier, Mr Nsima Ekere, the Managing Director of NDDC, had said that the design for the road provided for 67 culverts and a carriage width of 7.3 meters.
Ekere said the design also provided for a shoulder width of 2.75 meters on both sides of the road and a total pavement thickness of 4oo millimeters.
He explained that because of the difficult terrain, there would be an average soil replacement of one meter deep and sand filling rising as high as 2.5 meters.
The NDDC managing director lauded the state government for its commitment to the project, saying the people of the state would benefit immensely from its partnership with the commission.
“Today’s occasion celebrates the limitless possibilities for growth and development when state governments and partners in the region team up with NDDC for common good of the people.
“It is also a pointer to the new direction of the commission.
“In our 17 years of existence, the NDDC has undertaken ground-breaking projects that have truly broken new grounds for growth and prosperity,” Ekere said
Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba, NDDC Chairman, said that the board would focus its activities on projects that would engender sustainable and comprehensive regional economic and social integration of the Niger Delta.
Ndoma-Egba said that the commission would soon, in partnership with Edo and Delta Governments, construct the Benin-Abraka road joining the two states, and Omadino-Okerenkoko-Esscravos road in Delta.
“We are also looking to partner with the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, for the construction of Abak-East-West road.
“This project was recently advertised and once the procurement process is concluded, NDDC will give it maximum attention.
“These three upcoming projects will have very tremendous socio-economic impact on the communities and the region,” the NDDC chairman said.
